The Shalimar Bagh, one of Srinagar's most popular tourist attractions, is the largest Mughal Garden in the Kashmir valley and is located on the shores of the idyllic Dal Lake. The 31-acre garden was formerly the favourite summer retreat of Emperor Jahangir and his court. The Arabic word for "delightful" in the original name of this magnificent work of art was "Farah Baksh," which also meant "house of love."

Marvellous Architecture
Shalimar Bagh is a rectangular core structure with four radiating limbs and was built on level ground near the Dal Lake. It provides beautiful views of the small terraces and the lake. Three main terraces each have a different colourful picture. The second terrace is referred to as the Diwan-e-Khas, while the first terrace is also known as the Diwan-e-Aam. The Zenana gaden is located on the third terrace. Each terrace with a Chinar lining receives water from a fountain.
The garden is home to countless plant kinds that, as the seasons change, offer a stunning display of colour. The garden's central Shah Nahar water channel, which receives its water supply from the Dal Lake, is located there.
Chini Khanas
The tiered gardens of Srinagar Shalimar Bagh are given a distinctive and special character by these arched niches. These recesses once held oil lamps that were lit to give the flowing water an exotic appearance, but now they hold pots with vibrantly coloured flowers.
Baradari
Another distinctive architectural element is the Baradari's four beautiful doorways, which are thought to have once been the remains of ancient temples that Shah Jahan had destroyed.
